1st harbour of Normandy during the Middle Ages, its history is also linked to that of England.
The drakkar Mora built for William at his wife’s command set sail to the conquest of England from Barfleur in 1066. Barfleur was plundered and burnt by the English in 1120. St Nicolas’s church came to replace the 11th c roman church in the 17th. It is surrounded by the marine cemetery, a three-mast whaling ship, used as an ex-voto, was offered for the painter Paul Blanvillain’s birth. Barfleur’s waterfront has a stern charm emanating from its grey granite
