At the crossroad of roman roads, Charroux became a fortified place in the time of the dukes of Bourbon.
The rising of Charroux is linked to to its charter that made a free place in 1245. It was flourishing during th Renaissance thanks to its tanneries and wine-growing. The city was burnt down in 1568 and 1576 during the Religion Wars but the église St Jean Baptiste survived. The village is organized around its central square.
