The Most Beautiful Villages of France
Gargilesse-Dampierre

A haven and source of inspiration for the writer George Sand, the romantic village with its harmonious houses, in the shade of the castle and the church, it stretches on a steep hill bathed in lush vegetation.
In 1844, the writer George Sand discovered this village and described it at great length and with beautiful words. From the remains of the medieval castle destroyed in 1650 during the Fronde (revolt of the aristocrats against Louis XIV, then an infant), only a postern and two round towers remain. The 12th roman-style sandstone church is next to the castle. There is a nave with the 24 old men from Revelation, scenes from the Old and New Testaments in the apses. The crypt is adorned with 12th and 16th frescoes of rare beauty, representing the instruments of the passion of Christ, and scenes from Jesus’ and Mary’s lives. After Claude Monet, many painters perpetuated the artistic vocation of the village and exhibit their canvases inspired by the site.
