Just by an ancient lava stream above the Marrone valley, Salers stands out at some 3000 feet.
Salers gained the right to enclose itself behind walls from Charles VII in 1428, of which the Beffroi and Martille gates remain. In 1550, Henri II settled there the royal court of justice for Auvergne. The city has kept the buildings used by the officers of justice. St Matthieu’s, with a roman-style gate, owns five 17th Aubusson tapestries and a religious painting showing Christ being put to the grave.
