Le Marais, Notre Dame, Chatelet-les-Halles

Historical, cultural and trendy, this area is very Parisian. You will enjoy Le Marais with its Place des Vosges Square, the church of Notre-Dame, Le Louvre Museum.

The hippest part of town, also one of the oldest. Look up, the architecture is stunning. Many private mansions built by the aristocracy are located here in narrow side streets or around the Place des Vosges. You'll also find some of the city's most interesting museums. The Marais is now established as the rainbow district of Paris: gay bars, restaurants, and clubs line the streets.

A little further south of the Seine River, is the ancient Jewish neighborhood: falafel sandwiches are easy to come by. Visit it and don't miss either Saint-Paul Saint-Louis Church, or the tiny shops, all surprising, will attract you along your stroll.

Northeast of this area, the Georges Pompidou center (also called "Centre Beaubourg") houses the Parisian Museum of Modern Art. It's also a research place : many students come here to gather information. This monument's architecture is quite controversial: you'll judge for yourself when you get there. In front of the building, there is a square with a street-show.

This pedestrian area will guide you to Les Halles shopping center which includes hundreds of shops. The name originates from its former activity : it was the supply market for Paris before it was transferred to Rungis outside of Paris. Nowadays, the nightlife is bustling with an array of bars and restaurants. But you'd better be careful at night. Nearby is the famous Saint Denis street where some women wait for "gentlemen" on the sidewalks.

Some hundred yards away you'll find the Hotel de Ville Square. This was the strategic place of the Paris Liberation in 1944. It is now the administrative center of the city and there, you can enjoy free exhibitions about Paris.

To the East, you'll find the historical and ancient section of Paris. The Ile de la Cité (City Island) and The Ile Saint-Louis (Saint Louis Island) were the first parts of Paris, originally called Lutèce. The Ile Saint-Louis is a haven of peace and calm. Some of the oldest building of Paris are located on this very charming island. Craft's shops are situated along the sidewalks of these virtually traffic-free street.

Further west you must visit Notre Dame Cathedral. It's one of the most visited building of the world. You'll enjoy an unforgettable vista of Paris. Don't miss the magnificent nave with its stained-glass windows.

The Paris Court of Justice is located very near Notre-Dame Church. Inside, you'll visit la conciergerie where Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI were imprisoned before being executed by the new French Parliament in 1792. La Sainte Chapelle is also one of the gothic architectural jewel of Paris.
