Beynac-et-Cazenac

Aquitaine

Just below its huge castle, Beynac-et-Cazenac is a magnificent village along the banks of the Dordogne. The refined food of Périgord and the pleasant river add to its natural charm.

It was inhabited as early as 2000 BC. A reconstitution of prehistoric dwelling is located in the archaeological park. The castle was besieged by Richard the Lion Heart then dismantled by Simon de Montfort, it was taken many times by the French and the English armies during the 100 Years War, then left to ruin under the Revolution. Under restoration since 1961, it can be visited . Beynac lived off the traffic on the river. The traditional gabares (boats) have given way to canoes and pleasure boats.
