Hell-BourgHell-bourg in the heart of the « intense island » offers the best of the creole art-de-vivre and hospitality. The circus of Salazie, dug within the piton des Neiges, is the set of Hell-bourg : ravines diving into the Mât river, cascades springing from vegatation-covered cliffs. It was long a paradise for fishers and hunters, as well as a haven for fugitive slaves escaping the plantations on the coast. Thermal sources were discoverd in 1832 and Hell-bourg became a spa for well-off families during the summer heat. Trekking paths can be done with local guides.
