La Couvertoirade

Midi-Pyrénées

Perched on the top of the open spaces of the Larzac causse, La Couvertoirade is the work of the Templar Knights and the Hospital order.

Erected in the 12th , the castle is one of the network commanderies the Templar Knights weaved across Europe and the Holy Land. Declared heretics by Philippe Le Bel in the beginning of the 14th c, the templars, whose great master was burnt on a pyre, gave way to the order of the Hospitals who inherited all their wealth. They were also monk-soldiers, they enclosed the city within walls in the 15th c to protect it from the bands of highwaymen and epidemics. From the top of the watchtower, theneye can go as far as the Larzac and the group of villages.
